Welcome to the IDT Internship page. This is a place for IDT students to read about and apply for internship opportunities with IDT partners, and for businesses and organizations to contact IDT about setting up internship opportunities.
IDT students must all complete an internship as part of their degree. This happens after at least the core IDT coursework (IDT 500, IDT 520, and IDT 525), and usually after all coursework is completed except for practica and the final project. Internships may be arranged independently by the student in consultation with their advisor and an organization of their choosing, or may be facilitated by the the IDT program with one of the organizations listed on this page according to the process outlined below. In either case, the student will need to ensure that all paperwork is completed before, during, and after the internship. Internships generally are equivalent to a minimum of one month of half-time work (20 hours per week); one month of full-time work is preferable, with a suggested maximum of two months of full-time work.
For Businesses and Organizations
Because the internship is done at the end of the students' core coursework, they will come to you with the full set of ID competencies, including the ability to analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate instruction and training solutions. Depending on where they are in the program, they may also have a variety of technical competencies in web-based and computer-based instruction, instructional simulations and games, and human performance technology.
We're happy to handle all the vetting for you to make sure that the interns who apply for your position have the qualifications you are looking for or you can interact directly with the students to make your own determinations. If you have specific projects that require specific skill sets or which must occur within a specific time frame, we will be happy to post those opportunities in detail here for students to read. We will also send out an announcement to our students and generate a list of interested and qualified students to send on to you to consider; from that point on, it is entirely your decision to interview and/or select an intern (see the PLATO Learning internship posting on this page for an example). If you have ongoing need for interns in different areas with the same kinds of competencies, we will also be happy list and describe those (see the DCE internship posting for an example).
Either way, you'll be sure you have someone who is highly qualified for your position.
For IDT Students
The organizations listed here have told us that they are open to providing internships for IDT students at any time on a case by case basis. In some cases, they may have a specific need for an intern (e.g., a time frame or specific skills or experience). We will list those as they come up, so check back occasionally to see what has been posted. Whether you are interested in a specific posting or simply want to be considered for an internship (i.e., one that has not been posted), read the descriptions below and send your vita, a list of courses you have completed in IDT, and when you would like to complete your internship, to Dr. Van Eck, or to the "Contact Us" link at the left.
