Mark Grabe, Ph.D.
Dr. Mark Grabe received his Ph.D. as an Educational Psychologist from Iowa State University in 1975. He became interested in the application of technology as part of his research interests (e.g., development of critical reading skills in elementary readers, development of study skills in freshman college students) and has publications based on these interests dating back to 1984.

His present interests focus on a) the use of technology to improve the decision-making processes influencing the study behavior of introductory college students enrolled in large courses, b) multimedia authoring as learning activities in K-12 settings, and c) the role of teacher beliefs in determining how and if technology will be used in K-12 classrooms. He has received grant support for his research and development activities from the National Science Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, Apple Computer, and the Department of Education. Mark and Cindy Grabe are internationally known for their work in technology integration, and they are coauthors of a leading textbook on this topic: Integrating Technology for Meaningful Learning - 4th ed.

IDT Graduate Research Assistants 2009-2010

Hongxia Fu, M.S.

Hi! I am Hongxia Fu, a PhD student from Instructional Design and Technology (IDT). I was a college teacher in China before I came to UND. My interest is in collaborative learning, simulation, learning evaluation, data mining, research methods, and, of course, instructional design and technology.

My husband, my son, and I love the safe and peaceful life in Grand Forks.  We are impressed with the friendliness of the people here. They have helped us with many things. For example, one time my car got stuck in the snow and someone helped pull it out. I also notice that people say hello to strangers, including me. This is an awesome community.

We especially admire the professors from College of Education and Human Development for their commitment and devotion to their work. In fact, every UND staff and faculty member we have contacted has won our deep respect for their professionalism.

I'm excited to be a graduate research assistant in the IDT program. By working with IDT professors, I’ve learned not only cutting edge research results but I have also seen their passion to do help us in everything, such as they helped me improve my writing, even when it is not a course writing assignment. The teaching is also very good; I feel that courses are well designed and I think our professors have a passion for teaching.

I’m looking forward to studying and sharing with you. If you have any questions about IDT, please feel free to let us know.

Sherry

Sherry Love, M.Ed.
Hi! I’m, Sherry Love, a 2nd year PhD student and Graduate Research Assistant in the IDT Program at UND. Originally from Atlanta, GA, I earned my M.Ed. in Instructional Design and Technology from the University of Georgia.  My current research interests include simulations and gaming within virtual worlds, problem-based learning and social networks.

Prior to coming to UND, I worked for six years as an instructional designer, project manager and multimedia developer in both corporate and higher education environments.  While working in business and industry, I designed e-learning courses and worked with the redesign of departmental e-learning curriculum.

As challenging and varied as corporate environments can be, my heart lies in higher education. There, I worked with Faculty and Staff on a variety of instructional projects and initiatives- from e-learning courses and multimedia instruction on Blackboard to - designing strategies for the use of technologies in the classroom.

I look forward to meeting and working with you as we complete our programs of study!

Christina Siegfried

Christina Siegfried

Hello fellow IDT students! My name is Christina Siegfried, the newest member to the assistant team. I moved to Grand Forks from Toledo, Ohio about one month ago to pursue my Master's of Science in the IDT program.

My undergrad study was in the area of Visual Communications Technology (VCT) from Bowling Green State University (BGSU). I am a cross-media specialist with experience in video production, printing production, interactive media, and photography.

As part of my undergrad, I was required to complete three co-ops. As part of the co-op experience, I worked as a Digital Media intern at Anthony Wayne Schools (K-12) creating video documentaries, software tutorials, and assisting in teaching video journalism classes. Upon resignation at Anthony Wayne, I worked in the Student Technology Center at BGSU, assisting students and faculty with a variety of technology projects. This included teaching workshops on iMovie, iDVD, and Blackboard.

I am also a licensed exhibitor in the state of Ohio and help run a professional pyrotechnics company with my dad. His company is called Knights of Thunder Pyrotechnics and we are paving the way for new safety design and firework displays.

If you have any questions about software, digital media, or IDT, please don't hesitate to ask!
